Upcoming Certification Meeting on Videotaping & YouTube

Hello OMTA friends,

In two weeks, Monday, October 10th, those interested in MTNA National Certification will meet at Graves Piano and Organ from 10:00 – Noon. Anyone who is brand new, and needs a basic orientation on the process of becoming nationally certified, should come early, at 9:30 a.m. All attendees are encouraged to a bring their certification binder, filled with information about the five projects, as detailed on the website:

Our guest clinician will be Liz Atkinson, who earned her NCTM about four years ago. The process is fresh in her mind and she is very tech savvy. She will share advice on how to video-tape your own playing and your teaching demonstrations. She will teach you how to set up a private YouTube Channel and how to down-load video to it. She will show you how she organized her five projects into folders and with links, in order to submit one document to MTNA, as required.

You really don’t want to miss this session. When Liz presented last year, it was so helpful to see camera angles and discuss video cameras, iPads, tripods, etc. She also encouraged and inspired us get comfortable with the technology and she answered many questions.

If you already have the capability to video-tape yourself, you might record a lesson or two, to start getting comfortable with the camera rolling. At least audio-record yourself, if you do not yet have a way to video-tape. Doing your own self-analysis could start this week. Do you talk too much? Are you effective in your pacing? your choice of words? Do you ask good questions of the student? Do you answer those questions yourself, or do you pull the information out of the student? Does the student leave the lesson having experienced success? Will he/she know HOW to practice at home? Use this aid: http://www.mtnacertification.org/media/24958/assessment.pdf

The last half hour, 11:30 – Noon, will be devoted to Projects 1 and 4. Please share what you have done on those and bring questions you have. I hope you have been successful setting aside a couple hours each week to work on your certification. Just think how you would move along nicely if you scheduled yourself for two 90-minute sessions each week!
