At the Conference, guest speaker Michael Lester will present: “It Takes Two to Sing: The Pianist/Singer Collaboration”. Mr. Lester will perform as collaborative pianist in a short program of art songs and arias with singers Jon Juergens, Jamie Hartzell, Helen Allen, and Crystal Sellers all of whom he works with as a coach/accompanist. The program will include selections by Bellini, Verdi, Chausson, Rossini, Rachmaninoff, and Carter. After a break for refreshments, Mr. Lester will speak about the art of vocal coaching and accompanying and field questions by those in attendance.
Music Teachers National Association has designated 2010-2011 as “The Year of Collaborative Music”, having been launched at the MTNA National Conference in Albuquerque this past March and concluding with the 2011 National Conference in Milwaukee in March 2011. Below is the Mission Statement for the Year of Collaborative Music as it appears on the MTNA website (www.mtna.org):
Year of Collaborative Music Mission Statement
The Year of Collaborative Music will celebrate the importance of collaborative music making in society and in the profession worldwide. Begun by collaborative pianists within MTNA and led by significant national and international music associations, YCM will promote the diversity of ensemble playing opportunities available to musicians of all ages and skill levels.
For this project, collaborative music is defined broadly as any activity involving two or more musicians, particularly one-on-a-part, non-conducted ensembles. The umbrella definition would include professionals, amateurs, families, retirees, students of all ages or any combination of interested musicians.
The role of the vocal coach/accompanist is one of intimate collaboration with the singer as the two performers work together to prepare the vocal repertoire. The successful coach/accompanist must have special skills beyond those of excellent musicianship and a command of the instrument. Many of our civic, academic, and religious musical organizations continue to rely on a person with these skills to augment their artistic activities.
Kick off your year’s teaching activities by attending this interesting presentation.
